The World Builders Process
To become a more Conscious World Builder, engage in these practices whenever feasible and appropriate :
Practice Mindfulness: of moment to moment experience, noting how experience of the interior and exterior world arises from how we choose to deploy attention and action. Note also what kinds of worlds our choices and the choices of others create. Although some of the most straight-forward, comprehensive and refined methods of developing mindfulness have come out of the Buddhist tradition (particularly the Insight meditation or Vipasana tradition) other methods with similar results have developed in the western spiritual traditions and to some extent philosophy, notably in Christian contemplative prayer and phenomenology among others.
Engage in Dialogue: Converse with others while remaining open to the possibility of being affected, influenced or changed (in perceptions, beliefs, world view or lifestyle) as a result of the conversation.
Employ Systemic Thinking: Develop the capacity to understand how events and patterns of events arise from causal structures, many of which are constructed out of human assumptions while many are due to the operation of physical reality. Learn to distinguish the difference between symbolic causal structures (like language, art and music) and physical causal structures ( "stuff" made of atoms and molecules). It is useful to think of reality as shaped by constraints from both physical reality and symbolic reality. For example, how do ideas alter atoms and molecules both in the brain and outside it? On the other hand, how do atoms and molecules both in the brain and outside it affect thinking?
Pursue Sustainable Development: (individual, cultural, social and economic) within the limits of the planetary budget. Sustainability relates to the ability of a process to function without depleting non-renewable resources. This is a hotly debated issue. Many economists and business persons worry that demands for sustainable economics and business will stifle progress and diminish the standard of living. Others make the case that changing our ideas about economics and business can insure the longer range survival of the planet while still offering a vigorous economy for business and comfortable lifestyles.
